About

Adam Hodges is  an Andrew W. Mellon Postdoctoral Fellow in the Humanities at Carnegie Mellon University where he teaches courses for the English Department’s rhetoric program.

He has previously taught at Stanford University for the Linguistics Department, at the University of Colorado for the Linguistics Department and the Program for Writing & Rhetoric, and at Colorado State University for the Anthropology Department.

He earned his PhD in linguistics from the University of Colorado, where he also received his MA, a graduate certificate in cognitive science, and an undergraduate degree in environmental biology with minor coursework in kinesiology. 

Among his scholarly work in sociocultural linguistics, he has written a monograph, co-edited two books and written several journal articles and book chapters. 

In addition to his academic work and teaching, he has coached Masters swimmers at the University of Colorado and multisport athletes in Boulder, has worked as a freelance writer for publications including the Colorado Daily, and has designed and edited websites including the online edition of the Colorado Triathlete magazine.

He has spent a large part of his life as a competitive endurance athlete, with over two decades in the sport of triathlon starting at age 16. Highlights of his triathlon career include competing in the World Triathlon Championships, the World Duathlon Championships, and the Ironman World Championships in Hawaii.  He has raced in the pro ranks, and has earned USAT All-American status on multiple occasions as an elite amateur.

In addition to his love for the mountains and the natural world, he enjoys international and independent films, loves to explore philosophical and religious studies, and has a budding interest in architecture, green design, and photography.
