The 'New John Ashcroft'

Meet Alberto Gonzalez.

Bush gave the nod today to White House counsel Alberto Gonzalez to take over for the departing John Ashcroft (pending approval by Congress.)

Alberto Gonzalez is the author of the leaked January 25, 2002 memo that attempted to justify the suspension of the Geneva Convention in the administration's conflict with the Taliban and al Qaeda (see recent court decision that said the Geneva Convention still applies to those prisoners held at Guantanamo Bay.)

Center for Constitutional Rights President Michael Ratner said, "making Alberto Gonzales the Attorney General of the United States would be a travesty: it would mean taking one of the legal architects of an illegal and immoral policy and installing him as the official who is charged with protecting our constitutional rights. The Gonzales memo paved the way to Abu Ghraib."
